About these figures: the map and the listings on this page show Sidney North-East pet-friendly condos and townhomes only. There are too few pet-friendly condos and townhomes for a separate report, so the six statistics describe the whole Sidney North-East market.
Search Sidney North-East condos and townhomes that allow pets, in the seaside side of Sidney-by-the-Sea on the Saanich Peninsula. The live map and statistics above show how many are for sale now and at what prices.
Sidney North-East pet-friendly condos and townhomes are the strata homes near Beacon Avenue, Roberts Bay and Tsehum Harbour whose bylaws let you bring a cat or dog, in a flat seaside town where the daily dog walk follows the water. The map above marks the ones listed today, and the statistics give asking prices for the north end as a whole.
They range across the neighbourhood's condo and townhome stock, including homes like townhomes and condos on Harbour Road and Amelia Avenue. The Sidney North-East market report shows the wider market, since there are too few for a separate report.
Every listing here records pets as permitted, but each north-end strata writes its own limits.
Apartments off Fifth Street and Beacon Avenue, and townhomes around Amelia, Rothesay and Harbour Road.
A walkable seaside town with the waterfront and shops close by.
Read the strata's pet rules and the Town's leash and licence rules before you firm up an offer.
In the north end of Sidney, the strata homes that accept pets are split between apartment buildings a few blocks from Beacon Avenue and townhome complexes closer to Roberts Bay and Tsehum Harbour. Only part of the area's strata stock allows animals, so a well-placed one seldom lingers. Use the map to see where today's listings sit, then check the walking routes and Town rules below.
For a buyer bringing a dog, the walk out the front door matters as much as the wording of the bylaw. Here that walk is level, close to the shoreline and, under Town rules, on a leash.
The Town of Sidney requires dogs to stay on leash in every public place except its one off-leash park. Every dog older than six months needs a Town licence, renewed each calendar year from January to December. Owners who renew before the last working day of February get a discount, and spayed or neutered dogs pay a lower rate. Animal complaints and lost pets in Sidney are handled by CRD Animal Control. Sort out the licence soon after you move, and keep the tag on the collar for walks along the waterfront.
Each Sidney strata sets its own pet rules. One complex may welcome two animals of any size; the next may allow one dog under a set weight, exclude some breeds or ask owners to register a pet with council. Get the current bylaws and rules, match them against your animal's size, breed and number, and ask the strata manager whether a pet amendment is on the agenda for the next general meeting. A seller's promise does not override a bylaw.
Peter Grant Park is Sidney's off-leash dog park, a large open space of natural grass with mulch paths on the west side of town. From the north end it is a short drive, and walkers reach it from Reay Creek Park or by trails from Greenglade Road and Frost Avenue West. The KELSET (Reay Creek) Trail runs from Canora Drive to the park in about 20 minutes, through forest beside the town's only salmon-bearing stream, so keep dogs leashed and out of the creek. The Town has also studied a fenced off-leash enclosure in Iroquois Park; check sidney.ca for its status.
For everyday walks, north-end owners have the waterfront walkway, about 2.5 kilometres of level, paved path that is easy on older dogs, and the open lawns of Resthaven Park on Resthaven Drive. Both sit beside the Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary, which takes in Roberts Bay and Tsehum Harbour and was established in 1931. Federal rules say dogs and cats must not be allowed to run at large inside a migratory bird sanctuary. In winter the bays shelter thousands of ducks, including buffleheads, American wigeon and green-winged teal, so a short leash on the shore keeps the birds and your dog out of trouble.
The same sanctuary rule covers cats, which matters to owners in the condos and townhomes closest to Roberts Bay and Tsehum Harbour. An indoor cat, or one that gets fresh air on an enclosed balcony, fits best with the herons and wintering ducks along the shore. If you are thinking of a screened patio enclosure, check the strata's rules on alterations to balconies and common property before you buy.
A pet-friendly condo off Fifth Street or Beacon Avenue puts the waterfront walkway a few blocks away, with a lobby, an elevator or stairs at the start and end of every outing. A townhome around Amelia Avenue, Rothesay Avenue or Harbour Road usually has its own ground-level front door and often a patio or small yard, which makes life with a dog simpler. Weigh the monthly fee, the parking and the storage for crates, leashes and wet gear next to the price.
The north end's pet-friendly list mixes low-rises and complexes from the 1970s to the 1990s with projects finished in the past decade or two on Rothesay, Fifth and Resthaven. Newer homes bring warranty coverage and better sound insulation, which helps if your dog barks at the door; confirm whether GST applies to anything recently built. In an older complex, read the depreciation report and ask what exterior or flooring work is planned.
Many buyers are downsizers bringing a dog or cat from a house elsewhere on the Peninsula, retirees who want a daily walk by the water, and working couples who like being minutes from the airport. Pet-friendly strata homes draw steady interest in Sidney, so have your pet's details and your bylaw must-haves ready before one comes up.
At Peter Grant Park, the Town's only off-leash park, on the west side of Sidney near Reay Creek. Everywhere else in town, including the waterfront walkway and Resthaven Park, dogs stay on leash.
Yes, for any dog older than six months. Licences run for the calendar year and are renewed each January to February for the best rate.
The listings record pets as allowed, but limits on number, size and type are set building by building, so read the bylaws first.
