The town's name, "View Royal," is said to have originated from a visit by Queen Victoria's son, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1869. Impressed by the breathtaking vistas overlooking the Saanich Inlet, he reportedly exclaimed that the view was "worthy of a royal view," thus giving rise to the town's moniker. Incorporated as a municipality in 1988, View Royal continued to evolve while maintaining a balance between preserving its natural beauty and embracing modern development.

Like all the district within Greater Victoria the first recorded civilized settlement in View Royal occurred in the late 18th century, as explorers and traders sailed along the coast in search of new horizons. The Hudson's Bay Company, a prominent fur trading company, established a presence in the area, setting up trading posts and cultivating relationships with the indigenous communities.

It wasn't until the mid-19th century that the area began to see significant European settlement.

As pioneers arrived, the landscape gradually transformed. Farmsteads emerged from the wilderness, and the fertile soil yielded bountiful harvests that sustained the growing population. The construction of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway in the late 19th century brought increased connectivity to the region, spurring economic growth and making it easier for goods and people to travel between View Royal and neighboring towns.

The town's commitment to preserving its historical heritage led to the designation of several heritage sites, ensuring that the stories of the past would continue to be woven into the fabric of the present. Today, View Royal stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its indigenous roots and the diverse tapestry of settlers who have shaped its trajectory. The town's scenic landscapes, charming neighborhoods, and thriving community reflect the harmonious coexistence of history and progress. As seasons change and years pass, those fortunate enough to call View Royal home find themselves not just residents, but guardians of a legacy that continues to flourish.

Long term Mayor David Screech was recently handed his walking papers after a boisterous election campaign that included the former mayor being evicted from a private campaign event and an anti corruption investigation as well as other controversies.

One such controversy emerged when discussions arose about urban development and preserving the town's green spaces. As the population grew and the demand for housing increased, there was a clash between those advocating for controlled expansion and those concerned about maintaining the town's natural charm.

The debates often pitted the need for modernization against the desire to protect the landscape that had drawn residents to View Royal in the first place. Proposals for new housing developments, commercial centers, and infrastructure improvements sparked passionate debates among the town's residents. Some argued that responsible growth was necessary to accommodate the changing needs of the community, while others feared that unchecked development could lead to environmental degradation and the loss of the town's unique character.

The controversy reached its peak when plans for a major shopping complex were put forth. Supporters believed it would bring economic growth and convenience to the town, while opponents voiced concerns about traffic congestion, increased noise levels, and the impact on local businesses. Public hearings and town hall meetings became forums for heated discussions, reflecting the town's struggle to strike a balance between progress and preservation.
