Reading and Writing
Literacy is the first goal in the 2026-27 school plan. Teachers use screening data and structured literacy lessons, including the UFLI approach, in the early grades, and focus on reading comprehension strategies in Grades 3 to 5.

Current MLS® listings inside the Happy Valley Elementary catchment, a compact area of about 3.3 square kilometres along Happy Valley Road that takes in the Walfred and Happy Valley neighbourhoods, the Luxton Fairgrounds and a few Colwood streets near Triangle Mountain, along with what to know about a school whose history goes back to 1912.
Happy Valley Elementary is a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school at 3291 Happy Valley Road in Langford, part of School District 62 (Sooke). Its mailing address reads Victoria, but the school sits in the City of Langford’s Happy Valley neighbourhood. The district’s 2026-27 school plan counts 394 students in 18 divisions, supported by about 58 staff.
Happy Valley has a long history. According to the school’s own archive, Happy Valley opened in 1912 as a single room with a cloakroom and entry hall, and one teacher taught every grade until 1928. In October 2004 a fire destroyed the building and its records, and classes moved to the former Metchosin School site until a new two-storey school opened in April 2007. Six more classrooms followed in 2010 and 2011, and Happy Valley became a K to 5 school in 2016 after a district-wide grade reconfiguration.
SD62’s middle and secondary boundary maps place Happy Valley in the Centre Mountain Lellum Middle School and Belmont Secondary catchments, and the school’s own website names Centre Mountain Lellum, in Westhills, as the next step after Grade 5. The district registers current students automatically in the pathway school assigned to their school. A district catchment and pathway review began in October 2026, so these steps could change.
Happy Valley teaches the regular English program from Kindergarten to Grade 5. It does not host French Immersion or Nature Kindergarten: Kindergarten French Immersion is offered at École John Stubbs Memorial, École Millstream Elementary and École Poirier Elementary, and Westshore families apply for Nature Kindergarten at Sangster Elementary, each with its own January registration and lottery. Offerings change from year to year, so confirm details with the school.
Literacy is the first goal in the 2026-27 school plan. Teachers use screening data and structured literacy lessons, including the UFLI approach, in the early grades, and focus on reading comprehension strategies in Grades 3 to 5.
A second goal targets number sense, reasoning and problem solving in every grade, with rich tasks and small-group support for students who need extra practice.
Staff are building their use of Universal Design for Learning, which gives students flexible ways to take in new material and show what they have learned.
The district lists BGC South Vancouver Island as the licensed third-party provider of before- and after-school care at Happy Valley. Families register directly with the provider, and spaces are limited.
Happy Valley has a new identity this year. Students weighed three animals, the falcon, the otter and the orca, and chose the Orcas as the school’s identity starting in September 2026; the school plan notes that elders on the Indigenous Education Council felt each animal had merit and wanted the students to make the choice. A Parent Advisory Council runs hot lunches and popcorn sales and recruits parent volunteers, and a Student Voice group gives students a say in school life.
The catchment runs along Happy Valley Road from just south of Glen Lake to about a kilometre south of the school, and east through the Walfred neighbourhood to Jacklin Road, where a few Colwood streets in the Triangle Mountain area fall inside. The Luxton Fairgrounds on Marwood Avenue, home of the Luxton spring and fall fairs, sit inside the boundary just west of the school. Streets farther south belong to the SCIANEW STELITKEL catchment, and Westhills and Glen Lake itself to PEXSISEN. The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district’s School Locator. Browse Happy Valley real estate, Happy Valley houses, Triangle Mountain homes or all Langford properties.
At the start of November 2026 there were about 50 homes listed inside the catchment, and about 25 of them had been built in 2024 or later, mostly townhomes in new complexes and new houses in Walfred. Townhomes were the largest group, about 25 listings priced from roughly $600,000 to $780,000. Seven condos ran from about $400,000 to $600,000, and 13 detached houses from about $730,000 to $2.25 million, with a median near $1.1 million. Five lots and land listings, from about $340,000 to a large property listed near $3 million, sit outside the usual range, as do a few 1970s houses on big lots near Walfred and Luxton roads.
Older students continue through Centre Mountain Lellum to Belmont Secondary; see homes in the Belmont Secondary catchment. Neighbouring catchments include SCIANEW STELITKEL Elementary to the south (its official name is written in SENCOTEN) and PEXSISEN Elementary to the north.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Happy Valley Elementary. When a catchment school is full, new students are waitlisted and may be placed at a designated overflow school. The district’s School Locator still carries a standing note that space is always extremely limited at some schools, especially Happy Valley and Lakewood, although Happy Valley is not on SD62’s list of schools at capacity for kindergarten in 2026-27. French Immersion and Nature Kindergarten have their own registration and lotteries, and SD62’s catchment and pathway review, with Board decisions expected in spring 2027, could change boundaries. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 62 (Sooke) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
