About McKenzie Elementary

McKenzie Elementary is at 4005 Raymond Street North in Saanich. It is a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school in School District 61 (Greater Victoria), with 257 students on its 2025-26 school growth plan, and it sums up its mission as building a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and attitudes. That plan concentrated on students’ sense of belonging and on writing.

Few schools in the district record their past in such detail. McKenzie opened in 1912 as a one-room wooden schoolhouse on an acre of land, with the land, building and equipment together valued at $2,500. Rooms were added in 1913-14 and 1918, electric lights replaced coal-oil lamps in 1926, and after a 1934 fire destroyed much of the building it was rebuilt on the same foundation; that rebuild is today’s old wing. A gym followed in 1959, the office wing in 1963, a library wing in 1972 and a second gym in 1977, renamed Demers Gym in 2007 in memory of a long-time parent and educational assistant. McKenzie became a K to 5 school in September 2004, completed seismic reinforcement in 2011 and celebrated its centennial in 2012.

McKenzie is part of the Spectrum family, with Spectrum Community School as the secondary. The district has described it as a long-standing dual feeder to two middle schools, and its 2019 boundary review recommended making that split formal: students in the northern part of the catchment go to Glanford Middle and those in the south to Colquitz Middle. The same review enlarged McKenzie’s catchment to take in the northern section of the old Tillicum catchment, partly so young children would not have to cross the highway to get to school. The district’s School Locator confirms the middle school for any address.

Programs and Learning

Alongside the BC curriculum, McKenzie offers an early-years centre, regular outdoor learning and a full sports program. Programs and teams vary from year to year, so check current details with the school.

StrongStart BC Centre

McKenzie is one of six SD61 schools with a StrongStart BC early learning centre, a free drop-in program where children up to age five come with a parent or caregiver to play and learn before Kindergarten. Greater Victoria’s centres run weekday mornings from 8:45 to 11:45.

Learning Outdoors

Classes head out to the natural areas near the school, including Colquitz River Park, a short walk away, and Swan Lake, to study nature and life cycles, the salmon of the Colquitz among them.

Two Gyms and School Teams

Daily physical activity uses two gymnasiums and the outdoor space, with periodic tasters in tennis, golf, pickleball, gymnastics and curling. Teacher-sponsored teams cover fall cross-country, soccer, swimming, basketball, rugby and track.

Choir and School Life

The McKenzie Choir, regular hot lunch days and a Ready Set Roll active and safe routes to school initiative round out the week, and families can get involved through the Parent Advisory Council and Parent Connect.

School Community and Child Care

Before- and after-school care operates on the grounds through licensed third-party providers, as at every SD61 elementary school, and the school’s website links to a March 2025 child care update. Classes run from 8:45 a.m. to 2:37 p.m., and the school publishes its goals, growth plan and safety plans online.

McKenzie teaches the English program only. French Immersion, like the district’s other programs of choice, has its own registration: Kindergarten registration opens online each January, the French Immersion catchment school for an address may not match the English one, and seats go by space and enrolment priority, with a lottery when demand outstrips seats.

Living Within the McKenzie Catchment

This is a compact catchment, entirely within Saanich. The Trans-Canada Highway forms its southern edge against the Tillicum Elementary catchment, and from there it runs north through the streets the MLS® system files under northern Tillicum, Gateway, Glanford and Marigold, with a corner of Lake Hill. Carey Road, Glanford Avenue, Raymond Street and Rowland Avenue are typical addresses, the Colquitz River corridor runs roughly along the western side, and the Rogers Elementary catchment lies to the north-east. For secondary school the area belongs to the Spectrum Community School catchment. The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district.

Detached houses dominate. A few date from the 1900s and 1910s, many more are post-war bungalows and 1950s family homes on streets such as Baker Street and Glanford Avenue, and others come from the 1970s to the 1990s. New construction is arriving too, including a house finished in 2025 and townhomes completed in 2026. Condos are concentrated along Carey Road in buildings from the 1990s to the 2010s. Uptown, the region’s big shopping and transit hub at Douglas Street and the highway, is a short trip from the catchment’s south-east corner.

At the start of November 2026 there were about 25 homes listed inside the catchment. Condos asked roughly $400,000 to $700,000; detached houses mostly ran from about $700,000 to $1.55 million, with a median near $1 million; and a new townhome was listed just under $950,000. The top of the range was driven by development value rather than family homes: a land listing near $3.3 million and two 1940s houses asking about $2.15 million each. See all Saanich houses for sale for a wider comparison.

A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at McKenzie Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
