About Belmont Secondary School
Belmont Secondary School is at 3041 Langford Lake Road in the Westhills area of Langford. It teaches Grades 9 through 12 in School District 62 (Sooke), where it is one of two large Westshore secondary schools along with Royal Bay Secondary in Colwood. Its teams compete as the Belmont Bulldogs. SD62 confirms that Spencer Middle School on Goldstream Avenue feeds into Belmont, so many Langford families move through Spencer before arriving here in Grade 9.
Belmont has a long history for a fast-growing suburb. The school began in 1947 in former Canadian Armed Forces barracks off Jacklin Road, close to what is now central Langford, and stayed on that site for decades. In September 2015 the district moved Belmont into a new purpose-built school in Westhills, near Langford Lake.
The new building filled quickly. When the province announced a third Westshore secondary school in October 2025, SD62 noted that Belmont and Royal Bay were each serving more than 1,800 students, above the numbers they were built for. That new school, planned for 2460 Gateway Road in Langford with room for 2,000 students, is targeted to open in 2030. French Immersion is no longer offered at Belmont: the school directs Westshore immersion students to Royal Bay Secondary.
Academic and Specialty Programs
Alongside the regular Grade 9 to 12 curriculum, Belmont runs a university-preparation elective, three sport academies and a range of career and trades options. Programs, fees and registration windows change from year to year, so confirm current details with the school before you plan around them.
AVID
Advancement Via Individual Determination is an elective paired with English that prepares students in the academic middle for college or university, with work on study habits, writing, critical thinking and collaborative tutorials. Students can apply in any grade; admission is by interview and space, and the school calls its AVID model one of the longest-established in the province.
Climbing Academy
A timetabled program for Grades 9 to 12, taken for one semester or the full year, that groups students by ability rather than grade, from recreational to advanced. Students climb three days a week with a Boulder House membership, add a strength day and a tutorial day on topics such as injury prevention, and may count the program in place of a PE course. Fees apply, and bursaries are available.
Hockey Academy
Senior and junior groups follow a weekly rhythm of two on-ice skill sessions, off-ice strength and agility work, and a classroom session on nutrition, sport psychology, biomechanics and hockey history. Registration opens in early February on a first-come basis.
Baseball and Softball Academy
Running one block per semester throughout the year, this academy rotates indoor training, on-field work, weight training and classroom theory. Students earn their PE credit for the year plus a separate credit for the baseball or softball skills portion.
Trades and Dual Credit
The Career Centre connects students with dual-credit and trades training through Camosun College’s South Island Partnership, Youth Train in Trades and apprenticeship pathways. Belmont hosts the Auto TASK trades program, and the school also lists cosmetology among its programs.
International Program
Belmont welcomes international students through the Sooke School District’s International Student Program. A liaison teacher at the school supports current international students, while new applicants from outside Canada apply through the district.
Arts, Athletics and School Community
The Bulldogs field teams in badminton, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, rugby, soccer, track and field, ultimate and volleyball. Football is a point of pride: the school describes itself as one of the few with a well-established football program, and it keeps a separate site for the team.
On the arts side, Belmont offers an audition-based Dance Company along with dance technique and performance, hip hop and conditioning, and tap and Broadway studies. Drama runs from Grade 9 to 12, with a Theatre Company for Grades 10 to 12, and there are Film and TV courses, a music department and a visual arts program. Students also have counselling, inclusive education services, Indigenous education support and a library learning commons, and an on-site Wellness Centre linked to the West Shore Health Unit takes appointments. A Parent Advisory Council meets through the year.
Living Within the Belmont Catchment
The map search on this page covers the eastern side of Langford, including Mill Hill, the Fairway area along Goldstream Avenue, Atkins and the eastern edge of Langford Proper, together with Colwood Corners and the Six Mile corner of View Royal. It is this site’s own approximation rather than SD62’s official boundary, and the Belmont campus itself sits a short drive west of the mapped area, near Langford Lake and Westhills. Part of View Royal is served by School District 61 (Greater Victoria) rather than SD62, so check the district for any View Royal address. For wider searches, see Langford properties, Colwood properties or View Royal properties.
Housing here is mixed and mostly mid-priced by Greater Victoria standards. Manufactured homes in established Mill Hill parks sit near 1970s and 1980s family houses, newer townhome rows off Goldstream Avenue, and condos around Colwood Corners and Millstream Road, including the recently completed Millstream Residences. In late October 2026 there were about 66 homes listed inside the map area, priced from roughly $165,000 for a manufactured home to about $2.2 million for a large family house, with an average asking price near $675,000.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Belmont Secondary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. SD62 began a district catchment and pathway review in October 2026, partly to decide which neighbourhoods will attend the new Langford secondary school, with board decisions expected in spring 2027. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 62 (Sooke) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
