About Parkland Secondary School
Parkland Secondary School is located at 10640 McDonald Park Road in North Saanich, close to the Sidney town boundary. It is one of three secondary schools in School District 63 (Saanich), alongside Claremont and Stelly’s, and serves students in Grades 9 through 12.
The school opened for the 1973–74 school year and received a significant addition and upgrade in 2003. With roughly 525 students, it serves the communities of Sidney and North Saanich. Most Parkland students come up through North Saanich Middle School, and the elementary schools in the catchment include Sidney Elementary, Deep Cove Elementary and KELSET Elementary.
School teams compete as the Parkland Panthers. The Saanich International Student Program is based at Parkland, and the University of Victoria operates a weather station at the school as part of its school-based weather station network.
Academic and Specialty Programs
For a smaller school, Parkland offers an unusually broad set of programs, several of them tied to the ocean and the Peninsula’s marine setting. Program availability, admission requirements and course offerings can change from year to year, so families should confirm current details directly with the school.
International Baccalaureate Diploma
Parkland introduced the IB Diploma Programme in 2018 for students in Grades 11 and 12, and the school describes it as the only public IB Diploma Programme on Vancouver Island. The program combines advanced coursework in six subject groups with an extended essay and theory of knowledge.
Marine Institute
Established in 2012, the Marine Institute blends classroom and on-water learning, with courses such as marine science, biology and marine restoration and repair, along with pathways toward post-secondary credits, apprenticeships and trades certification. It works with the Institute of Ocean Sciences at nearby Patricia Bay.
Sailing Academy
Run with the Marine Institute, the Sailing Academy puts students on the water as part of their regular timetable, using the sheltered bays and harbours around Sidney and North Saanich.
Hockey Academy
The Hockey Academy combines on-ice development with academic studies. Ice sessions take place at the nearby Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich.
Judo Academy
Parkland’s Judo Academy offers structured martial-arts training and competition alongside the regular secondary curriculum.
Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education covers kayaking, canoeing, navigation, wilderness safety, first aid and survival skills, making use of the coastline, parks and trails that surround the school.
Arts, Athletics and School Community
Beyond its academies, Parkland offers music, including a concert band and musical theatre, along with creative and performing arts, modern languages, Indigenous education, and technology and innovation courses. Athletic teams compete in every season.
The school describes itself as an inclusive learning community that recognizes academic achievement, effort, athletics, community participation and citizenship.
Living Within the Parkland Catchment
The Parkland catchment covers the northern tip of the Saanich Peninsula. Sidney is a compact, walkable seaside town centred on Beacon Avenue and its waterfront walkway, with a wide choice of condos, townhomes and smaller detached homes, many of them popular with downsizers and families who want shops, services and schools close by.
North Saanich is more rural and spread out, with neighbourhoods such as Deep Cove, Ardmore, Dean Park, Curteis Point and the McDonald Park area around the school. Housing there runs from family homes on larger lots to acreages, hobby farms and waterfront estates. The Victoria International Airport and the Swartz Bay ferry terminal are both within the catchment, and the Pat Bay Highway links the area to Victoria.
In mid-October 2026 there were about 165 residential listings across Sidney and North Saanich, priced from roughly $325,000 for a condo to well over $10 million for waterfront estates. The current listings appear below, and you can also browse all Saanich Peninsula properties or read the Sidney and North Saanich area guides.
A property’s location in Sidney or North Saanich does not by itself guarantee placement at Parkland. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and academy admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 63 before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
