Spectrum Community School, located at 957 Burnside Road West in Saanich, British Columbia, is a comprehensive public high school serving students from grades 9 through 12. Established in 1974 as a replacement for Mount View High School, the school moved into its current facility in 1976. In 2005, Spectrum underwent a significant $5.5 million addition and renovation, enhancing its facilities to better serve its diverse student body.
As one of the largest and most diverse schools in the Greater Victoria School District #61, Spectrum currently enrolls approximately 1,200 students. The school prides itself on fostering an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment that supports both personal and academic success. In 2025, Spectrum will celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of educational excellence and community engagement.
Spectrum offers a wide array of programs catering to various student interests and aspirations. Academic offerings include Health Science, Secondary School Apprenticeship, Infotech, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), and Honours classes. The school also provides career-oriented programs such as Culinary Arts/Cook Training, Electrical, Law Careers, and Outdoor Leadership. In the performing arts, students can participate in Junior and Senior Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, Concert Choir, Guitar Lab, Musical Theatre productions, Dance Performance, and more.
Athletics play a significant role in student life at Spectrum, with 19 athletic teams, including a Hockey Skills Academy, football, and basketball. Notably, in 2024, the Spectrum Thunder Senior Boys Basketball Team won the BC Boys Basketball Quad A provincial championships, securing the school's first title in this sport.
The school's commitment to inclusivity is exemplified by its Stigma-Free Club, established to address mental health and addiction issues and to make Spectrum a more welcoming place. In 2018, Spectrum celebrated its first year as a stigma-free school, focusing on monthly themes such as religion, mental health, sexuality, and PTSD to educate students and reduce stigma.
Spectrum's dedication to fostering a supportive and dynamic educational environment is further reflected in its Aboriginal Nations Education program and its acceptance of international students through the Victoria International High School program. The school's facilities include four computer labs, an active interactive whiteboard resources program, and an auditorium that serves as a venue for the Greater Victoria Performing Arts festival.
Over the years, Spectrum has been the alma mater of several notable individuals, including rapper Dan Bennett, magician Shawn Farquhar, retired NFL kicker Eddie Murray, and Canadian-American reality television producer and director Brant Pinvidic.
As Spectrum Community School approaches its 50th anniversary, it continues to build on its rich history, offering diverse programs and fostering an inclusive community that prepares students for future success.
