About South Park Family School
South Park Family School, which the district also lists as South Park Elementary, is a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school at 508 Douglas Street in James Bay, steps from Beacon Hill Park. It belongs to School District 61 (Greater Victoria) and is a small school, with roughly 180 children on its own count. The building went up in 1894, and the school describes it as the oldest building in Western Canada that has operated continuously as a school.
Its present identity dates from September 1974, when parents from a cooperative preschool, who wanted to stay closely involved in their children’s education, helped save the school from closure and it became South Park Family School. Until 2020 it operated as a school of choice that families from outside the neighbourhood could enrol in. When School District 61 introduced new boundaries for the 2020-21 school year, South Park became one of three new neighbourhood catchment schools, alongside Cloverdale and Bank Street, and its catchment was carved partly from George Jay’s former area.
Students who finish Grade 5 here follow the district’s Victoria family of schools pathway: Central Middle School on Fort Street for Grades 6 to 8, then Victoria High School for Grades 9 to 12.
How South Park Teaches
South Park’s own program page reads more like a statement of beliefs than a course list. These are the ideas it puts first; practices can shift from year to year, so families should confirm current details with the school.
A Family School
Parent participation is treated as part of each child’s education rather than an extra. The parent advisory council calls it essential to the school community and invites families onto committees, class-contact roles and volunteer work.
Multi-Age Classes
Classes combine grades wherever possible, so that each child can be placed in the academic and social setting that suits them best instead of being grouped strictly by age.
Reporting Without Letter Grades
The school holds that letter grades are detrimental at the elementary level. Staff use other forms of assessment, evaluation and reporting, and aim to teach in ways that fit each child’s learning style.
Cooperation Over Competition
Building self-esteem is a stated goal, and the school says children thrive in classrooms that encourage cooperation rather than competition, a theme that runs through its approach to learning and behaviour.
School Community and Child Care
Before- and after-school care is run on site by South Park Out-of-School-Care, an independent provider that operates from the annex beside the school parking lot. As at every SD61 elementary school, child care on the grounds is provided by licensed third-party operators, so families register with the provider directly.
The parent advisory council keeps a busy calendar, from a spring fair and an online silent auction to classroom funds for teachers, and its program also lists student-led conferences, family meetings, parent education and an anti-racism initiative. Few schools have a setting like it: Beacon Hill Park, the Royal BC Museum and the Inner Harbour are all a short walk from the front door.
Living Within the South Park Catchment
This is one of the most urban catchments in the district. It covers the southern side of downtown Victoria, roughly south of the Johnson Street and Pandora Avenue corridor, including the Inner Harbour waterfront and the Legislature precinct; eastern James Bay between the Legislature and Beacon Hill Park; and the band of Fairfield apartment streets west of Cook Street. Beacon Hill Park and the Dallas Road shoreline below it form the southern edge. The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district.
Housing is overwhelmingly strata. Expect mid-rise and high-rise downtown condos, older apartment towers and newer buildings in James Bay, and only a scattering of character houses, duplexes and townhomes on the quieter streets near the park, with build years on current listings running from the 1890s to 2023. Neighbouring catchments include James Bay Community School to the west, Sir James Douglas to the east and George Jay to the north. For how school boundaries relate to prices, see our look at the school catchment premium.
At the start of November 2026 there were about 115 homes listed inside the catchment, and about 100 of them were condos, with a median asking price near $530,000. The very lowest prices, under about $230,000, belonged to what appear to be fractional hotel suites and small units in an older tower, so they say little about typical condo values. The handful of houses, duplexes and townhomes ran from roughly $620,000 to $2.3 million, while a few luxury condos were priced in the millions, topping out near $7.5 million. South Park itself does not teach French Immersion; the district registers Early French Immersion separately and uses a separate French Immersion catchment map, so check which French school serves a particular address.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at South Park Family School. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
