About Hans Helgesen Elementary
Hans Helgesen Elementary School is at 4983 Rocky Point Road in the District of Metchosin, with a Victoria mailing address (V9C 4G4). It teaches Kindergarten to Grade 5 in School District 62 (Sooke), and the school day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:38 p.m. The September 2026 newsletter counted 202 students in nine divisions on the first day, with 39 kindergarten children starting in the days that followed.
The school is named for Hans Helgesen, a Norwegian-born local pioneer who farmed, went to sea and prospected, and who served as an elected representative for Esquimalt and Cariboo. According to the school’s history, the 7.44-acre site was bought in 1968, and the school opened in September 1969 as an annex of Metchosin Elementary for Grades 1 to 5. The original building was demolished in 1991, and the new school became independent of Metchosin Elementary with a grand opening in October 1992. When Metchosin Elementary closed in 2003, its students and staff moved here.
SD62’s boundary maps place Hans Helgesen in the Dunsmuir Middle School and Royal Bay Secondary catchments, matching the district’s 2022 school alignment.
Programs and Child Care
Hans Helgesen is an English-program school with a strong early-years and outdoor flavour. Schedules and offerings change from year to year, so confirm details with the school.
StrongStart BC
The school’s StrongStart centre welcomes young children with a parent or caregiver. Its 2025-26 schedule ran Tuesday mornings indoors at the school and Wednesday afternoons outdoors, rotating among Witty’s Lagoon, East Sooke Park, Devonian Regional Park and Matheson Lake.
New Child Care Centre
A provincially funded child care centre in the school’s back annex adds 56 spaces for children from infancy to school age, run by the YMCA, according to the September 2026 newsletter. The district’s child care list also names the YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island for before- and after-school care.
Lunches and Supervision
The Flourish food program began delivering school lunches in mid-September 2026, and small snacks are available for students who need them. Staff supervise the grounds from 8:10 a.m. and after dismissal until 2:53 p.m. or the last bus.
Programs of Choice Elsewhere
Hans Helgesen does not offer French Immersion; West Shore families apply for Kindergarten-entry immersion at École John Stubbs Memorial or Millstream Elementary. SD62’s Nature Kindergarten runs at Sangster for West Shore addresses and at Saseenos for Sooke-area addresses.
School Community
The front of the school is a small forest the school calls its Neighbourwood, and it is not a play area. The Parent Advisory Council meets monthly in the library and is open to every parent, and the school planned a September Welcome Back Picnic with tours of the new child care centre. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Living Within the Hans Helgesen Elementary Catchment
This is a big catchment: about 68 square kilometres, running roughly 11 km from Royal Bay and Albert Head in the northeast to the shores near Rocky Point in the south and the edge of East Sooke in the west. The map search follows the district’s published catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district’s School Locator.
Its current listings fall into two very different groups. In Colwood, about 25 listings are in the western part of Royal Bay along the Metchosin line, where new houses, townhomes and presale condos such as Bella Park are still being added, several kilometres from the school itself. In Metchosin, about 20 listings spread across the Rocky Point, Kangaroo, Metchosin, Albert Head and William Head areas, from 1940s and 1970s family homes to newer custom houses on rural lots, around landmarks such as Witty’s Lagoon, Matheson Lake, Pedder Bay and the Municipal Hall on Happy Valley Road. A handful more are on the Sooke side, in East Sooke, Becher Bay and 17 Mile. Browse Metchosin real estate, Metchosin acreages and land, Royal Bay real estate or East Sooke real estate.
At the start of November 2026 there were about 55 homes and lots listed inside the catchment, with a median asking price near $975,000. Twenty-four detached houses ranged from about $700,000 to a Metchosin estate home near $5.6 million, with a median near $1.46 million. About 14 townhomes ran from roughly $720,000 to $1.05 million, eight condos from about $475,000 to $750,000, and nine land listings from about $200,000 to $1.4 million. Some 44 percent of all listings were built in 2024 or later or are still under construction, mostly in Royal Bay.
For high school, see homes in the Royal Bay Secondary catchment. Neighbouring pages cover the Sangster Elementary catchment, which takes in the rest of Royal Bay, and the SCIANEW STELITKEL Elementary catchment to the north.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Hans Helgesen Elementary. Catchment boundaries and registration rules can change, and when a catchment school is full, SD62 may place new students at a designated overflow school. French Immersion and Nature Kindergarten have their own registration and are not tied to the home catchment. SD62 is running a district catchment and pathway review in 2026-27, with a public town hall on November 16, 2026 and Board decisions expected in spring 2027. Buyers should confirm the current catchment, registration and bus eligibility with School District 62 (Sooke) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
