About View Royal Elementary
View Royal Elementary is at 218 Helmcken Road in the Town of View Royal. The school opened in 1949 with 155 students, almost four decades before View Royal incorporated as a town in 1988, and today it teaches Kindergarten to Grade 5 in School District 61 (Greater Victoria). It describes itself as a caring community of learners that works in partnership with parents to raise socially responsible citizens, and former students who drop by can hunt for themselves in the class photos hung around the stairwell.
View Royal is in the Esquimalt family of schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12. On the district’s K-12 catchment pathways chart, its students carry on to Shoreline Community Middle School and then Esquimalt High School. The school teaches the English program and is not one of SD61’s Early French Immersion schools, although Shoreline is where the district’s Late French Immersion entry point opens in Grade 6. The building has had room to spare: at the district’s September 2021 count the school had 288 students in a building rated for 440.
Programs and Activities
View Royal pairs early learning with clubs and sport, on the view that what children learn outside the classroom matters as much as what happens inside it. Offerings change from year to year; confirm details with the school.
StrongStart BC
View Royal hosts one of SD61’s six StrongStart centres, a free early-learning program for children up to age five. A parent or caregiver stays for the session while early childhood educators lead games, stories and circle time; families register online and book visits.
Clubs, Choir and Sport
Outside class time, students can join a chess club, the school choir and a cross-country team, and readers can sign up for a book club tied to the Red Cedar Book Awards, British Columbia’s young readers’ choice program, in which students read the nominated books and vote for their favourites.
School Community and Child Care
The district’s child care list names View Royal Out of School Care as the provider on the school grounds, and families sign up with the provider directly. October 2026 brought a book fair and a Halloween dance hosted by the Parent Advisory Council, and the PAC has run a year-end fun fair in past years with help from volunteers and local businesses. Classes start at 8:45 a.m. and end at 2:37 p.m., with outdoor supervision before and after.
Living Within the View Royal Elementary Catchment
The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district. Every current listing is in the Town of View Royal, within the View Royal, Six Mile and Glentana MLS® areas. The catchment covers central View Royal around Helmcken Road and the Island Highway, from the north end of Esquimalt Harbour toward the western shore of Portage Inlet, with part of the Six Mile area at its western edge. Victoria General Hospital and the Thetis Lake area to the north fall in the neighbouring Eagle View catchment. See all View Royal real estate, or narrow the search to View Royal houses, condos or townhomes.
Housing runs from houses built as early as the 1940s to recent townhome and condo projects. At the start of November 2026 about 40 homes were listed in the catchment. More than half were condos, priced from about $420,000 to $850,000; townhomes had a median asking price near $870,000; and the handful of detached houses had a median around $1.2 million, with the top listing near $1.67 million. About a third of the listings had been built in 2024 or later.
For high school, the area belongs to the Esquimalt High catchment. Neighbouring elementary pages cover the Eagle View Elementary catchment to the north and the Craigflower Elementary catchment. The blog also looks at whether a catchment premium shows up in local prices.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at View Royal Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision. View Royal Elementary does not offer French Immersion; families interested in Early French Immersion register at their French Immersion catchment school, which the district’s School Locator shows. Compare other catchments on the Greater Victoria schools page.
