Kindergarten to Grade 5 classes at Oaklands Elementary School meet in one of Victoria’s best-known heritage school buildings, at 2827 Belmont Avenue. Designed by architect C. Elwood Watkins and opened in August 1913, the school filled so quickly that a military tent served as an extra classroom by 1915, and enrolment peaked at more than 1,100 students in 1963. Rather than replace the original building, the district restored it in a renovation that began in 1998 and won a Hallmark Society Award of Merit in 2001, and the building received a structural seismic upgrade around 2000. The school now has about 400 students.
Oaklands belongs to School District 61 (Greater Victoria), and under the pathway chart the district introduced for 2020-21 it is part of the Oak Bay family of schools: students continue to Lansdowne Middle School and then Oak Bay High. The same boundary review drew the neighbouring Sundance-Bank catchment to relieve crowding here. The building also houses a community centre and a child care facility, so the school works as a neighbourhood hub well beyond the bell.
Oaklands is a single-track English school with an arts-rich timetable. Offerings depend on staffing and volunteers each year, so check current details with the school.

The school lists weekly classes in strings, visual art, dance and drama, along with ArtsReach workshops, visiting performers, concerts and talent shows. Grade 5 students can also join the strings program.
Chess is taught in the library for all ages, LEGO and craft clubs run through the year, and Grade 5 students take on leadership roles as lunch monitors. The ACORNS framework stands for accountability, cooperation, organization, respect, nurturing and safety.
Oaklands does not offer French Immersion. The school lists Willows Elementary, Lansdowne Middle and Oak Bay High as the French Immersion schools for its neighbourhood. SD61 handles immersion through a separate registration and its own French catchment map, and places depend on space.
Interschool teams include Grade 4-5 basketball and Grade 3-5 cross-country, rugby and track, and soccer runs at lunch for all ages. The grounds have a full basketball court and a half-court, two adventure playgrounds, mature oaks and rock outcrops, a courtyard garden for seasonal planting and native plants added through the school’s Greening Project.
The Oaklands Community Association provides before- and after-school care on the grounds, and families register with the association directly. Parents volunteer in classrooms, on field trips and in the library, and the PAC helps with events such as International Walk to School Day, fun runs and reading weeks.
Most of the catchment is the City of Victoria’s Oaklands neighbourhood, on streets such as Haultain Street, Scott Street, Burton Avenue, Oakland Avenue and Cedar Hill Road, with the Hillside Avenue corridor and Hillside Shopping Centre running through it. It reaches west into parts of Mayfair and Hillside near Lang Street and south to the northern tip of Fernwood, then crosses the municipal line into Saanich’s Camosun area around North Dairy Road, Allenby Street and Queenston Street; about one in four current listings is in Saanich. The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district.
Detached houses are the backbone, from 1910s and 1920s character homes to modest 1940s and 1950s houses, while condos cluster along Hillside Avenue and Grosvenor Road. Micro-condos of about 320 to 340 square feet built on Hillside Avenue in 2022 and 2023 have become one of the cheapest ways into the area, and new townhomes have gone up on Allenby Street in Saanich. At the start of November 2026 about 40 homes were listed inside the catchment, from a one-bedroom condo near $300,000 to a house around $1.95 million. Houses made up about half of the listings, from about $700,000 to $1.95 million with a median near $950,000; condos mostly sat between $300,000 and $600,000, townhomes ran from about $600,000 to $1 million, and two building lots were offered at about $750,000 and $850,000.

A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Oaklands Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
