About Sangster Elementary

Sangster Elementary School is at 3325 Metchosin Road in Colwood, with a Victoria mailing address. It teaches Kindergarten to Grade 5 in School District 62 (Sooke), and classes run from 8:45 a.m. to 2:33 p.m. The principal’s message counted fifteen divisions in September 2025, including the district’s Nature Kindergarten, and describes a setting near old-growth forest a short distance from Esquimalt Lagoon, with outdoor learning encouraged at every level.

The school says it was opened on October 17, 1958. Its name recalls Sangster’s Plains, as this part of Colwood was known for about fifty years, after Captain James Sangster. A Hudson’s Bay Company mariner who commanded the brigantine Cadboro from 1848 to 1854, Sangster later served Victoria as a marine pilot, harbour master, customs collector and postmaster, and he died at his home on Metchosin Road in October 1858.

Dunsmuir Middle School on Painter Road and Royal Bay Secondary both sit inside Sangster’s catchment, and SD62’s boundary maps place the school in the Dunsmuir Middle and Royal Bay Secondary catchments, in line with the district’s 2022 school alignment. Space has been tight: the district listed Sangster as at capacity for the 2023-24 school year, with new or waitlisted students from its catchment sent to a designated overflow school.

Nature Kindergarten and Programs

Sangster combines a regular English program with one of SD62’s two Nature Kindergarten sites. Program details and registration windows change each year, so confirm them with the school or district.

Nature Kindergarten

Sangster hosts SD62’s Nature Kindergarten for West Shore addresses. Children spend every morning outdoors, rain or shine, mostly on Royal Roads University property, then come back to school for lunch and indoor learning in the afternoon. Registration is separate, requires a parent information session and uses a lottery if seats run short.

A Program Since 2012

The Nature Kindergarten pilot officially opened at Sangster on September 26, 2012, with Royal Roads University among its supporters and Elders Lavina Charles and Shirley Alphonse giving the traditional welcome. Families cannot register for both Nature Kindergarten and French Immersion Kindergarten.

Before- and After-School Care

Sangster is one of the schools where SD62 staff run before- and after-school care themselves rather than a third-party operator. In November 2026 the district’s child care page showed the Sangster waitlist expression of interest as closed, so ask the district about openings.

Garden, Music and Library

Students have a native plant garden on the school grounds, a music program with its own webpage, a library learning commons and a Student Voice group. The Parent Advisory Council organizes fundraising and hot lunches.

School Community

The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Parent Advisory Council posts its executive list and meeting minutes on the school website. Sangster does not offer French Immersion; West Shore families who want it apply for Kindergarten entry at École John Stubbs Memorial or Millstream Elementary. The principal’s message acknowledges that the school stands on the traditional territories of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations.

Living Within the Sangster Elementary Catchment

The Sangster catchment covers about 4.8 square kilometres, all of it in the City of Colwood. The map search follows the district’s published catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district’s School Locator.

Royal Bay supplies most of the listings, about 26 of them: the master-planned community around Ryder Hesjedal Way and Royal Bay Secondary, with new buildings such as Eliza at Royal Bay, Pacific Townhomes and Origin at the Beachlands near the water. To the east, the Lagoon MLS® area runs toward Esquimalt Lagoon and includes the corner of Lagoon Road and Ocean Boulevard. The boundary splits Royal Bay with its neighbours: its western end belongs to the Hans Helgesen catchment, and Triangle Mountain to Wishart’s. Browse Royal Bay real estate, Royal Bay townhomes, Colwood waterfront homes or all Colwood real estate.

At the start of November 2026 there were about 35 homes listed inside the catchment, with a median asking price near $820,000. Townhomes were the largest group, about 15 from roughly $680,000 to $1 million with a median near $800,000, and seven condos ranged from $500,000 to $830,000. Ten detached houses ran from about $770,000 to $2.6 million, with a median near $1.2 million; the top was a newer house in the Lagoon area. Four land listings ranged from about $500,000 to a Lagoon-area parcel near $2 million. Nearly 40 percent of the listings were built in 2024 or later or are still under construction.

Sangster students usually continue to Dunsmuir and then Royal Bay; see homes in the Royal Bay Secondary catchment. Neighbouring pages cover the Wishart Elementary catchment to the west and the Hans Helgesen Elementary catchment in Metchosin and western Royal Bay.

A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Sangster Elementary. Catchment boundaries and registration rules can change, and when a catchment school is full, SD62 may place new students at a designated overflow school. Nature Kindergarten and French Immersion have their own registration and lotteries and are not tied to the home catchment. SD62 is running a district catchment and pathway review in 2026-27, with a public town hall on November 16, 2026 and Board decisions expected in spring 2027. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 62 (Sooke) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
