About Sooke Elementary
Sooke Elementary is a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school at 6560 Sooke Road in the District of Sooke, part of School District 62 (Sooke). Its history page says the school dates to 1891, when the first school in the Springside area became too small and William Bell Charters donated land for a new one, and it describes Sooke Elementary as the oldest school in B.C. still on its original site. The buildings have been replaced, added to and renovated over the years; the district’s 2018 Long Range Facilities Plan lists the current main building as dating from 1959. The school’s website says about 330 children are registered from Kindergarten to Grade 5.
On the district’s official boundary maps, the Sooke Elementary catchment sits within the Journey Middle School and Edward Milne Community School catchments. Journey, on Throup Road, is the only middle school in the Town of Sooke and teaches Grades 6 to 8; Edward Milne on Sooke Road covers Grades 9 to 12.
Programs and Early Learning
Two family services run from the school grounds, and two district programs of choice are close by. Confirm details with the school or the district.
StrongStart BC
Sooke’s StrongStart early learning program is based at the school and runs five days a week. Young children attend with a parent or caregiver on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings in the school’s modular classroom, and on Tuesdays the group meets outdoors at Ed McGregor Park. It is drop-in, so no booking is needed after registering.
Before and After School Care
Sooke Elementary is one of the schools where SD62 itself runs before- and after-school care. The program uses the modular classroom from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. and from the end of the school day until 5:30 p.m. Spaces are limited and handled by the district’s child care office; the 2026/27 expression-of-interest list has already closed.
French Immersion in Sooke
Sooke’s Early French Immersion program is not at Sooke Elementary but at École Poirier Elementary on Throup Road, about 1.2 km north. Children start in Kindergarten, and because applications exceed seats, the district fills them by lottery using its enrolment priorities.
Nature Kindergarten Option
For Sooke addresses, the district’s Nature Kindergarten runs at Saseenos Elementary, about 2 km east. Children spend every morning outdoors, rain or shine, on T’Sou-ke Nation lands. Parents must attend an information session before registering, and a lottery applies when it is oversubscribed.
School Day and Community
Classes run from 8:50 a.m. to 2:38 p.m., with recess at 10:10 and lunch just before noon. The school’s mission statement describes “a comfortable, welcoming community of enthusiastic students, staff, families, and community members,” and the school has a library, a Parent Advisory Council, a family handbook, and bus and Kindergarten registration through its website. Its land acknowledgement recognizes the Coast Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth nations on whose territories the school stands.
Living Within the Sooke Elementary Catchment
At about 9 square kilometres, the catchment is compact. It runs from the streets below the town centre close to Sooke Harbour, through the shops and services along Sooke Road, into the Sunriver subdivision with its newer family streets, and then north in a narrow band along Phillips Road. On the west it takes in part of Broomhill, while the Sooke River area and Saseenos to the east belong to the Saseenos Elementary catchment. Of the current listings, more than half are in the MLS® Sooke Village Core area, about one in five in Sunriver, with the rest mostly in Broomhill and Phillips North. The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district’s School Locator. The locator itself notes that two elementary schools can occasionally appear for one address, which does not mean families can choose.
Browse Sooke Village Core real estate, village core houses, Sooke townhomes or all Sooke real estate, and read the Sooke neighbourhood guide. At the start of November 2026 there were about 55 homes listed inside the catchment, and about one in seven had been built in 2024 or later. Detached houses made up most of the list, typically from about $500,000 to $1.9 million with a median asking price near $800,000; two houses on Phillips Road in the north of the catchment asked about $2.2 million to $2.3 million. Townhomes ran from about $520,000 to $720,000, and a few condos started near $315,000. Six lot and land listings ranged from about $275,000 to one large parcel near $4 million.
Older students continue into the Edward Milne Community School catchment. Next door are the Saseenos Elementary catchment east of the Sooke River and the much larger John Muir Elementary catchment to the west. For how school boundaries can show up in prices, read about the school catchment premium.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Sooke Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and when a catchment school is full SD62 can place a child at a designated overflow school. French Immersion at École Poirier and Nature Kindergarten at Saseenos each have their own registration and lottery, so a Sooke Elementary address does not by itself mean a seat in either program. SD62 began a district catchment and pathway review in October 2026, with Board decisions expected in spring 2027. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 62 (Sooke) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
