About Braefoot Elementary

Braefoot Elementary is at 1440 Harrop Road, beside the semi-rural Blenkinsop Valley, and teaches Kindergarten to Grade 5 for School District 61 (Greater Victoria). Its 2025-26 growth plan lists 232 students. Braefoot is part of the Reynolds family of schools, and the district’s catchment pathway chart sends its students on to Cedar Hill Middle School and then Reynolds Secondary. The school also works with the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Education and Camosun College, regularly hosting student teachers and education assistants in training.

Cedar Hill Middle moved into a new building in fall 2025: a $45.6-million seismic replacement with 575 seats, designed as a low-carbon school and paired with a neighbourhood learning centre for community programs. Braefoot’s own catchment was adjusted in 2020, when the district’s boundary review made small changes to the Braefoot and Lake Hill lines to follow better walking routes and redrew where Braefoot meets the Quadra and Doncaster catchments.

Programs and Learning

Braefoot balances academics with the fine arts and athletics. Its 2025-26 growth plan targets a coordinated approach to social and emotional learning, after an earlier plan built around reading screening and a schoolwide reading culture. Braefoot runs an English program. French Immersion is a district program with its own catchments; neighbouring Doncaster is one of the dual-track schools, and seats are assigned through a January registration and a lottery when demand exceeds space, separately from the English catchment. Programs vary by year, so confirm details with the school.

All-Weather Outdoor Time

Braefoot calls itself an all-weather school: students head outside in every kind of weather, not just on dry days.

A Full Athletics Calendar

Coaching permitting, Grades 3 to 5 run cross-country, with meets at Lambrick Park and Clover Point leading to city finals at Beacon Hill Park, plus lunchtime soccer, basketball and floor hockey, a track team for the zone meet at UVic and, in some years, rugby.

Fine Arts at Lunch and Recess

Arts groups meet at lunch and recess and build toward winter and spring concerts, assemblies and talent shows; choir, drama and ukulele have all run in past years.

Friday Walk and Run

Every Friday at 12:45 pm the whole school walks or runs together, and visitors are welcome to join in.

School Community and Child Care

Indigenous Education staff have led drumming with a Braefoot class, and the PAC’s hot lunch program helps pay for field trips, Beach Day buses and a welcome-back barbecue. For child care, SD61 lists two providers on the grounds, Kids Klub and the Braefoot Community Association; between them they have offered out-of-school care and a preschool for three- to five-year-olds with an outdoor-education focus.

Living Within the Braefoot Catchment

Most of the catchment is Cedar Hill, with smaller pieces filed under Gordon Head, Mount Doug, Blenkinsop and Maplewood on the MLS® map. A focal point is Braefoot Park, at McKenzie Avenue and Braefoot Road: 5.7 hectares with fields for baseball, lacrosse and soccer, an artificial turf field, sport courts, a playground and the Braefoot Park Centre, plus trails linking toward Blenkinsop. On the east side the catchment reaches Shelbourne Street, where newer condo buildings have gone up; to the west is the semi-rural Blenkinsop Valley, and the north end climbs toward Mount Douglas Park. The search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right at the boundary could fall on either side; check an exact address with the district. Neighbouring pages cover the Lake Hill Elementary catchment and the Cloverdale Elementary catchment, and at secondary level this area is part of the Reynolds Secondary catchment.

Detached houses make up half of the listings, joined by established townhome complexes on McKenzie Avenue and Cedar Hill Cross Road and condos ranging from 1970s buildings to ones completed in 2023 on Shelbourne Street. At the start of November 2026 there were about 35 homes listed inside the catchment, from an older one-bedroom condo just under $300,000 to houses at about $2.65 million. Townhomes generally asked between $700,000 and $1.3 million, and the typical house about $1.3 million. Saanich’s Quadra McKenzie Plan, adopted in July 2026, names a McKenzie corridor and a Shelbourne McKenzie centre as places for more housing and services over the next 20-plus years, which matters to anyone buying along those streets. See Cedar Hill houses, townhomes and condos, or read about what a catchment address can add to price.

A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Braefoot Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision. Compare other catchments on the Greater Victoria schools page.
