About Sundance-Bank Elementary School

Sundance-Bank Elementary School sits at 1623 Bank Street in the South Jubilee part of Victoria and is one of the newest neighbourhood schools in School District 61 (Greater Victoria). The board created a Bank Street catchment in its 2019 boundary review, partly to ease crowding at Oaklands Elementary, and the school opened in September 2021. It started with Kindergarten and has added a grade each year: the district counted 86 students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 in 2024-25 and planned for the full Kindergarten to Grade 5 range in 2026-27. The school acknowledges that it stands on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen peoples, the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

On the district’s pathway chart, Sundance-Bank is part of the Oak Bay family of schools, which leads to Oak Bay High. The family’s two middle schools are Monterey and Lansdowne, so families should confirm the middle school for a specific address with the district’s School Locator.

The property holds two buildings. Classes use the Sundance building, built in 1967, while the brick Bank Street School beside it dates from 1910, opened to pupils in 1912 and later housed an art college; it is on the city’s heritage register and currently closed. The district rates both buildings at its highest seismic risk level, and in August 2024 it asked the community about three ways to upgrade and expand the school to about 240 students. The best-supported option, backed by 59 per cent of 487 survey respondents, would replace both buildings with a new 10-classroom school, a Neighbourhood Learning Centre and on-site child care, which would mean demolishing the heritage building. The district has said it will weigh that feedback, so buyers on nearby streets should watch its project page for decisions and timing.

Programs and Learning

Sundance-Bank is a single-track English school, so learning centres on the provincial curriculum in a small, still-growing school. The notes below come from the school and district sites; offerings change from year to year, so confirm details with the office.

Kindergarten to Grade 5 in English

Students follow the BC curriculum in English from full-day Kindergarten through Grade 5. Because the school has grown one grade at a time since 2021, class groupings are still settling toward the district’s projected capacity of about 240 students.

French Immersion Registers Separately

Sundance-Bank is not a dual-track school. SD61 runs Early French Immersion at nine elementary schools through its own registration and a French Immersion catchment map that can differ from the English one. Placement depends on space, with a lottery and waitlist when a school is oversubscribed, so check your French Immersion school with the School Locator.

School Community and Child Care

Before- and after-school care on the grounds is run by the Oaklands Community Association, one of the licensed third-party operators the district lists for its schools, and families register with the association directly. The school is a drop-off point for the 1000 x 5 Literacy Project, a Greater Victoria children’s book recycling effort built around the goal of 1,000 books by age five, and students take part in the annual Terry Fox Run. A Parent Advisory Council supports events and volunteers.

Getting to school is mostly done on foot. The school’s parking lot is small, so it asks families to walk or bike where they can, or to use the two-hour parking on Fell Street and Bank Street rather than residents-only spaces.

Living Within the Sundance-Bank Elementary Catchment

The catchment is compact, about 1.7 square kilometres, and nearly all of it lies in the City of Victoria. Most of it is the Jubilee neighbourhood: the South Jubilee streets around Bank Street, Leighton Road and Morrison Street, and the blocks around Royal Jubilee Hospital up toward Bay Street. To the west it takes in the eastern edge of Fernwood along Begbie, Pembroke and Elford streets, and to the east it runs to Foul Bay Road, with a small corner of north Oak Bay just beyond. The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district.

The housing is a genuine mix. Condo buildings from the 1970s to the 1990s line Fort Street, Leighton Road, Morrison Street and Begbie Street, character houses from the 1910s and 1920s fill the side streets, and new construction is arriving quickly: 11 of the current listings were built in 2024 or later, including new condo buildings on Oak Bay Avenue and Adanac Street and new townhomes on Shelbourne Street. At the start of November 2026 there were about 40 homes listed inside the catchment: 19 condos from about $380,000 (median near $495,000), nine townhomes from about $475,000 to $1.4 million, and 12 detached houses from about $720,000 to $2.3 million, with a median house price close to $1.06 million.

For wider searches, see Jubilee condos for sale, Fernwood houses for sale or the whole Oak Bay High catchment. Neighbouring elementary catchments include Oaklands Elementary to the north and Willows Elementary across Foul Bay Road, and our look at the school catchment premium explains how boundaries show up in prices.

A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Sundance-Bank Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
