École Macaulay Elementary stands at 1010 Wychbury Avenue in the Township of Esquimalt, although its mailing address reads Victoria. It is a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school in School District 61 (Greater Victoria) with about 480 students, and it says it has welcomed Esquimalt’s children for more than 68 years. Two programs share the building: an English program and Early French Immersion.
Macaulay belongs to the district’s Esquimalt family of schools. On SD61’s K-12 catchment pathways chart, English-program students move on to Rockheights Middle School on Highrock Avenue and then to Esquimalt High School, while Early French Immersion students continue at Shoreline Community Middle School in View Royal before going on to Esquimalt High. Shoreline is also where the district’s Late French Immersion option begins, in Grade 6. The School Locator on the district website shows the designated schools for any single address.
Macaulay’s two tracks share one playground and one parent community, and the school also runs early-learning and literacy initiatives. Class configurations and offerings can change from year to year, so families should confirm current details with the school.

Macaulay is one of nine SD61 elementary schools that offer Early French Immersion, with 10 divisions taught in French. Children start in Kindergarten or Grade 1 and no prior French is needed; registration opens online each January.
One of the district’s six StrongStart centres runs here. The free program is for preschool-aged children, who attend with a parent or caregiver while early childhood educators lead stories, play and a healthy snack. Families register online and then book visits.
Macaulay was awarded a $70,000 literacy grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, spread over three years, to add books reflecting all cultures and families to classroom and school libraries and to hold family literacy events with the Parent Advisory Council.
Before- and after-school care on SD61 elementary grounds is run by licensed third-party providers, and the district’s child care list shows Woodland Childcare Centre at Macaulay. Families arrange care directly with the provider, and spaces are limited, so it pays to ask early. School updates from 2026 mention a Walking School Bus program for getting children to school on foot, and the Rainbow Club and the Indigenous Education group were among the student groups featured in a June 2026 art exhibition that helped raise money for arts programming at the school. Classes run from 8:45 a.m. to 2:37 p.m.
The map search follows the district’s published elementary catchment map, simplified, so homes right on the edge may fall on either side; check an exact address with the district. Nearly every current listing is in the Township of Esquimalt, spread across the Rockheights, Old Esquimalt, central Esquimalt and Saxe Point MLS® areas. The catchment climbs to the rocky high ground around Highrock Park, takes in the shops and services along Esquimalt Road, and runs south to the waterfront at Fleming Beach, Macaulay Point and Saxe Point and east to West Bay and Head Street. Its western edge meets the naval lands of Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, so many military families look here; see homes for sale near CFB Esquimalt. You can also browse all Esquimalt real estate, Esquimalt houses, condos and townhomes.
The housing stock mixes postwar bungalows and older character houses on quiet side streets, view and waterfront homes near Saxe Point, and a large crop of new condo and townhome buildings. At the start of November 2026 there were about 100 homes listed inside the catchment, and nearly half had been built in 2024 or later. Condos started near $300,000 with a median asking price around $550,000, townhomes had a median near $750,000, and detached houses ranged from about $550,000 to $2.8 million. Two development-land listings sat above that range.
Older students here head on to the Esquimalt High catchment. Next door are the Victoria West Elementary catchment to the east and the Craigflower Elementary catchment to the north. For a look at how school boundaries can affect prices, read about the school catchment premium.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Macaulay Elementary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision. French Immersion is assigned through a separate SD61 French Immersion catchment that can differ from the English one, with registration each January and seats filled by enrolment priority and, if a school is oversubscribed, by lottery. A Macaulay address in the English catchment does not automatically mean a French Immersion seat at Macaulay. Compare other catchments on the Greater Victoria schools page.
