About Royal Bay Secondary School
Royal Bay Secondary School, known in its own materials as École Royal Bay Secondary, is at 3500 Ryder Hesjedal Way in the Royal Bay neighbourhood of Colwood. It is a Grade 9 to 12 school in School District 62 (Sooke) and, with Belmont Secondary in Langford, one of the two large secondary schools serving the Westshore. Its newsletters and student spaces carry the Raven name, from the Raven’s Nest to the Ravenous Cafe.
The school is young. The province broke ground in 2013 on a $40.8-million building planned for up to 800 students, with a teaching kitchen, a rooftop basketball court and a 350-seat theatre, and the principal’s message notes that the school was built in 2015 on the traditional territories of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. Enrolment climbed quickly, and a 600-seat addition opened in September 2020.
Growth has not slowed. When the province announced a third Westshore secondary school in October 2025, SD62 said Royal Bay and Belmont were each serving more than 1,800 students, beyond their intended capacity. The new school, planned for 2460 Gateway Road in Langford with room for 2,000 students, is expected to open in 2030 and should ease pressure on both campuses.
Academic and Specialty Programs
Royal Bay is the Westshore’s secondary French Immersion school, and it hosts a long list of academies: the school names dance, equine, golf, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, mountain bike and soccer academies, each with its own application, fees and acceptance decision. Program details change every year, so confirm current offerings with the school.
French Immersion
After a 2020 board decision, SD62 moved the Westshore’s secondary French Immersion program to Royal Bay, and Belmont now directs immersion students here. Immersion courses must be completed in French for students to earn the Double Dogwood diploma, and a few senior courses are available online through another district.
Dance Academy
Open to Grades 9 to 12 at four levels from intermediate to advanced, with entry by application, teacher recommendation or audition. Dancers train daily in jazz, lyrical, hip hop, modern, contemporary, ballet and tap, perform in a winter show and a year-end Evening of Dance, and take part in festivals.
Lacrosse Academies
Royal Bay runs separate boys’ and girls’ lacrosse academies. The boys’ program, for Grades 9 to 12, trains on the school’s turf field five days a week inside the regular timetable and earns PE and elective credit, and counsellors help players with NCAA eligibility.
Soccer Academy
Mondays are given to fitness, strength, recovery and classroom work, and Tuesday through Friday to technical and tactical training on the field. The coaching staff includes local club technical directors, and the academy works with the University of Victoria and other schools on post-secondary soccer pathways.
TASK Trades Program
Trades Awareness Skills and Knowledge is a one-semester program built around carpentry, with exposure to pipe trades, electrical, welding, sheet metal, automotive and heavy-duty mechanics. Many units are taught at Camosun College by college instructors; students earn up to 20 credits, safety certifications and a three-week work placement.
EXCEL Learning Support
EXCEL serves students with an Inclusive Education Plan (IEP) who need adapted expectations. They spend two periods a day in the EXCEL classroom working on English and math skills and take electives for the rest of the day.
Arts, Athletics and School Community
The 347-seat Teechamitsa Theatre is home to the Black Wing Theatre Company, which mounts three main-stage productions a year, while courses run from Drama 9/10 through Acting 11/12, a Senior Acting Company, Musical Theatre and Theatre Production. The music department keeps its own website, with a Winter Music Concert set for December 3, 2026, and art, media design, culinary arts, computer studies and business education round out the electives.
Royal Bay fields fall teams in cross country, soccer, volleyball and swimming, winter teams in basketball and wrestling, and spring teams in soccer, rugby, ultimate, badminton, golf, track and field and mountain biking. The school counted more than 200 athletes on 20 teams in a recent year. Students can also join leadership, a Gender and Sexuality Association and the International Program, and they have counselling, student support services, Na’tsa’maht Indigenous Education and an on-site Wellness Centre.
Living Within the Royal Bay Catchment
The map search on this page covers south Colwood around the school, including the master-planned Royal Bay community, Latoria and Triangle Mountain, then runs west through Olympic View to the newer subdivisions of Happy Valley and the Luxton and Walfred areas of Langford. It is this site’s own approximation rather than SD62’s official boundary map. For wider searches, browse Colwood properties or Langford properties.
Much of this area is newly built. Listings include new condos along Ryder Hesjedal Way, townhome projects such as Pacific Townhomes, recently built family houses in Royal Bay, Olympic View and Happy Valley, established family homes on Triangle Mountain and a good number of building lots. In late October 2026 there were about 135 homes and lots listed inside the map area, priced from roughly $350,000 for a one-bedroom condo to about $2.5 million for a large new house, plus a large land listing on Happy Valley Road near $13.9 million. That single listing lifts the area’s average asking price above $1.1 million, well above what a typical home here costs.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Royal Bay Secondary. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and French Immersion and the academies depend on application and capacity. SD62 began a district catchment and pathway review in October 2026, with board decisions expected in spring 2027. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 62 (Sooke) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
