About Lansdowne Middle School
Lansdowne Middle School, or École Intermédiaire Lansdowne, is a Grade 6 to 8 school in School District 61 (Greater Victoria). It is a middle school, not a high school: its students move on to a secondary school after Grade 8. The school describes itself as a learning community of almost 780 students and runs on two campuses. Grades 7 and 8 attend the North Campus at 1765 Lansdowne Road, in the District of Saanich, and Grade 6 students attend the South Campus at 2780 Richmond Road.
The North Campus sits on a large property of about 25 acres. In 2021 the Board of Education approved the sale of 7.3 acres of it to the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique, using $15 million in provincial funding, so that the francophone school board can build a permanent home for École Beausoleil. Lansdowne itself keeps the rest of the site.
The school’s stated aim is to develop thoughtful, healthy young people who contribute to their local and global community while meeting the needs of 11- to 14-year-olds. District school pages list Lansdowne, together with Central Middle School, in the Victoria family of schools that leads to Victoria High School, and the district’s K-12 pathways chart shows Lansdowne French Immersion students continuing to Oak Bay High School. The secondary school a student moves on to depends on the home address and program, so check it with the district’s School Locator.
Academic and Specialty Programs
Lansdowne follows the BC middle school model, with core subjects taught in teams and a wide rotation of hands-on courses. The details below come from the school’s own program pages and the district’s registration guide. Programs and timetables change from year to year, so confirm current details with the school.
English and French Immersion
Lansdowne is a dual-track school. French Immersion students are placed in early or late immersion based on their earlier language experience, and the school is one of four in the district offering Late French Immersion entry at Grade 6. The two tracks mix for enrichment, clubs and special events.
Advisory and Teaching Teams
Each day starts in an Advisory class focused on personal and social responsibility, study skills and goal-setting. Three to five Advisory classes form a team that shares the teaching of English, French, math, science, social studies and physical education.
Exploratories
Through all three years students rotate through hands-on Exploratory courses in woodwork, foods and nutrition, art, drama, outdoor education, creative threads, eco education and dance.
Mini-Ex Enrichment
Students not in band choose a Mini-Exploratory for two blocks a week, with topics such as architecture, cartooning, creative writing, debating, engineering, flight design, mathematical brain teasers, re-enacting Parliament and quilt-making.
Band and Music
Band is open to every student regardless of experience and adds a third weekly block before school. Optional ensembles include jazz band, a rhythm and blues band, beginner to advanced strings, concert choir and vocal jazz, and music students perform at festivals around the Pacific Northwest.
Recognition and Leadership
The school’s monthly Project X recognition honours extreme kindness, academic excellence, performance achievement and extra effort, and students can join the school’s Student Leadership club.
Arts, Athletics and School Community
The school calls both its music and athletics programs renowned. Extra-curricular teams cover basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, field hockey, mountain biking, track and field, rugby and cross-country, and the school enters a team in the TC 10K. A fitness circuit is set up for students and staff, and the physical education program supports the teams.
Clubs change from year to year but have included an Eco-Action Club, a backpacking club, games and crafts, homework club, a spaghetti bridge club and Lego robotics. Dance, drama and art are also built into the Exploratory rotation, so every student gets some arts time each year.
Living Within the Lansdowne Middle Catchment
The map search on this page is this site’s approximation of the catchment, not the district’s official boundary, and it overlaps the site’s Oak Bay High and Vic High maps in places. It is a long, narrow area that runs from Rock Bay and the Burnside streets near Gorge Road, through Mayfair and Hillside, to Oaklands in the City of Victoria, and then into the Camosun and Mount Tolmie neighbourhoods of Saanich around the school.
Housing is a mix of bungalows and character houses from the 1910s to the 1950s, a few newer infill houses, older condo buildings on Hillside Avenue and Gorge Road, and newer townhomes and compact condos. In late October 2026 there were about 100 listings inside the catchment map, priced from roughly $220,000 for a small condo to $2.5 million for a newer house in Mayfair. About 35 were detached houses averaging around $1.1 million, about 45 were condos averaging just under $490,000, and the rest were mostly townhomes. The overall average asking price was about $770,000.
A property’s address inside these boundaries does not by itself guarantee a place at Lansdowne Middle School. Catchment boundaries, registration rules and program admission can change, and some programs depend on capacity. Buyers should confirm the current catchment and registration status with School District 61 (Greater Victoria) before relying on school access as part of a real-estate decision.
