Single family homes are becoming less affordable in Greater Victoria due to excessive demand from other parts of Canada and abroad, and the environmentally constrained nature of our region, with the ocean on one side, ALR farmland in the Saanich Penninsula, and topographically constrained lands in the Western Communities. Also to blame are regional government policies such as the insistence on maintaining land with no farming potential witin the agricultural reserve, as well as the many obstructionist policies of local governments that are becoming increasingly hostile towards development. A lack of infrastructure into the Western Communities continues to plague the region, making areas like Langford and Colwood far less desirable than core areas. Obsessive preoccupation with non-existent environmental issues, like man-made global warming, by all levels of government, will continue to contribute to worsening the local housing crisis.
